What is video sewer inspection?

A sewer camera inspection sends a waterproof camera head on a flexible rod down your main line so you can see the inside of the pipe on a monitor in real time. It answers the question every homeowner asks after the second backup: is this a clog, or is the pipe itself failing?

Those are very different bills. A blockage is a cleaning. A cracked, offset, or root-invaded lateral is a repair or a replacement. Nobody can tell you which from the top of a cleanout, and any contractor quoting a sewer replacement without footage is guessing with your money.

The camera also carries a transmitting sonde. From the surface we track it and mark where the pipe runs and how deep it sits, so if work is needed later you know whether it passes under a driveway, a patio, or a tree before the price is set.

Buyers and sellers use the same inspection during escrow. On a Los Angeles County house built before 1980, a clean bill on the lateral is worth knowing, and a bad one is worth thousands in negotiation. You get the recording either way.

How does it work?

  1. 1

    Open and clear the access

We locate your cleanout, or pull a toilet when the house has none, so the camera enters the line cleanly without fighting a fixture trap.

  2. 2

Run the camera to the city main

The head travels the full length of the lateral. You watch live as it passes each joint, and the technician narrates what is normal and what is not.

  3. 3

    Locate and depth-mark findings

Where we see a break, belly, offset, or root mass, the sonde is tracked from the surface and the spot is marked in your yard with a depth. That converts a problem into an actual repair scope.

  4. 4

    Report and options

You get the footage and a written summary with your realistic choices — clean it, line it, spot repair, or replace — and the price for each.

Turned out our line was fine and we just needed a cleaning. They could have sold me anything and didn't.
